The Giant Stump was another idea for a destination hike.
Thanks again to my Executive Director for his support. The idea was to create a stump that was similar in size/diameter to the largest known tree in Indiana. The goal was to replicate the size but not the actual shape. Kokomo, Indiana has preserved and displayed what they claim to be the largest Sycamore stump in the world. I designed the Giant Stump to have more protruding roots and to be hollow to allow kids to go inside.
This project required a generator, mixer, heater, and carried water. There is almost as much concrete below ground due to the 32″ footer below the roots. It was all poured by hand/mixer using pallets of bagged concrete mix. The roots were basically sculpted by applying thick batches of concrete as I worked from the ground up.
