The “Wolve’s Den” project stemmed from the idea of having something unique as a destination for a hike. I appreciated the support and confidence extended to me from my Executive Director and for him allowing me to hire my brother to help. The site was not accessible by cement truck and also posed the challenge of no electricity or water.
The placement on a ridge was strategic in that it overlooked an existing river trail and the den would be difficult to see from above. It was designed with two openings and a small wall inside to deliver a sense of discovery. A generator was used to run the mixer and I hauled barrels of water with a small tractor. I used a kerosene heater and tarps to keep the cement from freezing. The foundation was dug below frost level and the entire project was reinforced with rebar. It is difficult to see in the photo but the top was shaped to look like a broken and slightly shifted slab of stone. Stain was added to take away the gray look of the concrete.
